The Art of Seduction

I found this article that is relevant. I particularly like the suggestion that the Old Masters simply ‘produced a better class of pornography’ and that art should never be “an incentive to action” (Kenneth Clark).
"I know it when I see it"
-Justice Potter Stewart 1964

“Je peint avec mon bitre.” “I paint with my prick.”
-Renoir

“Michael Angelo left a proof
On the Sistine Chapel roof
Where but half-awakened Adam
Can disturb globe-trotting Madam
Till her bowels are in heat...”
-WB Yeats

“Sex, in so far as it is not a purely physiological reproductive mechanism, lies in the domain of aesthetics?”
-Ezra Pound

“Erotica is using a feather, pornography is using the chicken”

Transcript

To generate text I can work with, I’ve been transcribing the ‘script’ from a porn film. The story is quite simple as porn narratives go; a couple are playing chess and then get distracted. The reason I find this one so funny is that you can hear the person behind the camera giving suggestions and instructions.

holy image

I’ve been experimenting with different ways in which I can hide images within other items. An image can be made by making holes in the paper, which means that it is only visible when held up to the light. I’ve experimented here by just using a needle but I am going to do some tests using a laser cutter. My idea is to print text on the piece of paper to further distract from the image.

Found this video of a laser cutter, just thought it was cool!

Heroic Nudity

I went to the Victoria and Albert museum to have a look at the statues of the human form. It was conventional in ancient Greek art to represent deities and divinized humans (or "heroes") in a state of heroic nudity (or ideal nudity) in paintings and sculpture. Nudity in classical sculpture was used to indicate a sculptures apparently mortal subject was in fact a hero or semi-divine being; the result being a depiction of an idealized, god-like body.

I think the idea of an ‘ideal’ body can definitely be seen today. Porn stars need to be considered to be able to go on forever, to have seemingly endless supplies of energy and everything else that’s needed! PORN STARS ARE OUR NEW HEROES!

Paper Voyeur

This website was suggested to me. It’s a really nice idea and I really like the images although it’s not really my style. The images are designed with the intent to arouse and are therefore distinguishable. Really nice website as well.

I like the idea of making up an image from the negative spaces.
Reminds me of those optical illusions where there can be two images in one, depending on how you look at them. This one is interesting because apparently children can't see the kissing couple because they don’t have prior memory associated with such a scenario, instead they only see the dolphins.

Seeing this wallpaper also reminded me of some toilets in Putney. It was in a pub toilet. I looked around and said how nice and different the wallpaper was. I took a closer look and realized that they were illustrations of sexual positions. I hadn’t realized what they were to begin with because I think at first I just took in the overall look of the image – traditional Victorian style illustrations – without actually looking at the content (and obviously not expecting to see porn all over the walls!). I think ill go back and take some photos of it but I think that might involve going back to Putney.
– photos to follow.

RABID BELL END DIVA

Really liked the work of Neil Drabble who came in to give us a talk. One of his projects was looking at very similar issues to me. He produced a series of paintings depicting scenes from amateur porn films. He mentioned that he liked the surroundings behind the people, the parts of the image that aren’t really there to be looked at but reveal quite a lot about what sort of people they are. Had an interesting chat with him in the bar afterwards about those paintings but also a performance/film sort of piece he did in a pub where the image of a vagina (laying in one pub) was transmitted onto a TV in another pub, slowly zooming out to reveal the at first indistinguishable image.

Pornography Typography Pornography

On a side note, I’m fascinated by the typography and the colours used in these magazines! Its so bad I almost love it. Pages are repeated, text is cut off at the edge of the page, these magazines are so artless they somehow possess a certain naivety about them?!!!

Inspired Vandalism

Through looking at examples of etchings, I was reminded of Insult to Injury by the Chapman brothers. In this work, they ‘defaced’ or ‘enhanced’ (depending on your point of view) a collection of revered original prints by Goya.

One Day Project

My class got given the challenge of trying something new, something out of our comfort zone.

I endeavored being a model for a life drawing class. Being naked in a room full of people was the most terri
fying thing I could think of doing! I’m pleased with myself for going through with it; behavior like this is not in my nature! I didn’t feel I had done the best I could have done at this session so I went back and did it again, this time for a three hour class. I’m happy I went back as I feel I got a more complete experience – although I didn’t particularly enjoy it! As evidence of completing my
task, I presented the drawings of myself.

Fiona Banner

Because I will be looking at the language used in porn films – as well as using language as a tool myself – I have taken another look at the work of Fiona Banner. Banner uses language as a way of dealing with complex issues such as war and pornography. For her piece Arsewoman in Wonderland, she wrote down with pink paint, everything she saw in an X-rated film on a bill board.

An article in
The Guardian produced at the time of this particular exhibition (Tate Britain, Turner prize 2002) comments on the piece:
"It's art. But is it porn?"
I also find a lot of her oth
er work interesting – her use of language highlights the difference in the way we understand written language to images.

Initial Thoughts

I like the idea of deceiving the people viewing the exhibition, sort of like ‘the emperor with no clothes’ story. Porn is generally considered to be of lower cultural worth because it panders to our carnal desires rather than any aesthetic, emotional or intellectual compulsions. I want the result to be the viewers some how condoning porn in appreciating my product, unaware of the true content.

Using porn as a device, I want my end product to possess glamour and flair. As well as being portrayed as sleazy and dirty, porn posses its own inherent glamour, probably as a result of it’s hey day and its mainstream success in the 60’s.

I want the end product to be something beautiful – a piece of art in its own right. I was really inspired by the work of
Wood Mcgrath when they came in to speak to us.
