I’m not necessarily condoning pornography through deciding to do this. I’m just highlighting how easily influenced people are by aesthetic conventions. If its dressed up, can it fool people into thinking its something that its not?
My original idea was to have an effect like this on a hanging A1 or A0 sheet. Unfortunately, the laser cutter at uni only goes up to A2. It looks cool but I don’t exactly know what to do with it. I need to decide exactly what I want to be saying.
After a long morning of experimenting with different versions of the image, we decided on one with bigger sized holes to reduce the time it would take to complete. This produced a different result than I originally wanted – my intention was to then print text on the card. With the image we ended up using, less space was left on the card to print on so I decided not to worry about the text on this test. As a result of this decision, I decided to use black card to conceal the burn marks you get from the laser.
These were the sort of porn films I was looking for but couldn’t find them before because I was just looking in sex shops where they mainly sell hardcore. It was Video Box that had the answer – feature length, soft core porn films complete with “acting” and narratives. The reason I was looking for these films was to experiment with editing out the smutty bits, leaving behind the now fruitless narratives. I was surprised by some films (such as Lord of the G-Strings), which were genuinely funny. I felt it would be pointless to make fun of these films as they were making fun of themselves already.
Other films that took themselves a bit more seriously were just plain weird, such as Jane Bomb the Sexy Spy. I was particularly fascinated by shots, awkward pauses and peculiar acting. I really like the surreal quality of these disjointed shots. Here are a few examples of scenes from Jane Bomb the Sexy Spy. And yes, the woman in the cat suit does start opera singing.
I've been looking closer at the work of Linder Sterling becuase she really interests me. I found this interview with her by the Tate. Its just really an overview of the thinking behind her early work inlcuding covers for the Buzzcocks and about the fanzine The Secret Public she produced alongside Jon Savage - I want to meet this woman!!!
